BREAKING NEWS: Roaring Success for Council and Community Cooperative Action.LesFauvesdeBath

With latest reports showing the impact of innovative work in one area of the region, RE:generate is proud to have played a key part alongside local Councillors and Strategic Partners in helping to bring a fresh outlook to relationships between residents and public servants in Bath and North East Somerset (BaNES).

18 months ago the LSP and ward councillors in BaNES started to look for alternative solutions to some deep seated problems facing residents and public services in a particular area. They invited RE:generate to attempt to engage with residents and help them to resolve some of the difficulties they were dealing with.

RE:generate facilitated a process of building trust, respect and networked relationships that encouraged the community to work together to find solutions and organise how to deliver the change they needed to achieve their ambitions.

The recently published report highlights the positive impact of the work and the changes achieved by residents working together with their councillors' support.

Crime and fly tipping has been signficantly reduced - with local papers reporting that ov er £1 million has been saved in the last year! Volunteering has increased dramatically and 8 social enterprises have been developed including environmental enterprises dealing with litter and bulky items, garden services and young people's music, theatre and the arts initiatives. This enterprising community has to date received new investment of over £10000 and they are developing confidence and skills to deliver sustainable change.

A real personal and community success has been achieved by a young man who was challenged and encouraged to develop his artistic talent. He volunteered to support local community enterprises and began working with RE:generate and the residents team and meeting with local Councillors Dine Romero and Paul Crossley. This process took him into a public art exhibition that has showcased his talents, is raising funds for local community projects and charities, and most importantly is showing his peers how "you can turn yourself around" and still be "cool" as you do something positive and creative with your life.

Impact in Scotland

While working in Glasgow RE:generate's team had a significant impact leading to the Scottish Government adopting RE:generate's work through CEIS and Community Renewal. Stephen Kearney and Julia Olsen built the structure of the Listening Process delivered by local Community Animators. Bob Mashall who initially had the idea of Full Employment Areas worked with the RE:generate team to enthuse the Scottish Government who later completely adopted the work.

Stephen Kearney, CEO of RE:generate, said,' The impact of the work in Scotland was fantastic but it was just the start. The team we worked with concentrated on just the worklessness agenda and not the broader holistic work of RE:generate so the impact could be far greater'.

Impact in Wales

Julia Olsen, Development Director, founder of Cae Post Recycling has stated that, ‘I am delighted that Mike Membury has received the green hero award.  When I founded Cae Post Recycling and worked on the project for many years I did so in the knowledge that it would be good for Wales from an environmental point of view and it would also provide opportunities for people with learning disabilities to make their way in life. My congratulations go to Mike Membury. I am pleased that the project is continuing to be a success’.

'RE:generate's Listening Matters process is a crucial innovation that takes development and engagement to an extremely effective level. Anyone with a responsibility or interest in engagement can use their process to achieve great results and I would encourage them to do so.

RE:generate enables deprived communities to develop their own sustainable solutions to the problems they face. Working from the ground up, they support community-led actions that tackle the issues that matter to people in ways that make sense. Their approach deals with exclusion and deprivation on a day-to-day basis. The work harnesses the resources and enthusiasm of local people to take action, speak up and achieve fantastic things.'

These social enterprises are dealing with some of the most intractable problems facing society, family breakdown, chaotic home environments, persistent unemployment, drugs, crime. They have put into practice all that they learnt from working with RE:generate and from their training with Ann Hope and Sally Timmel in South Africa which our Trust supported them to attend. They have demonstrated how a systematic approach that builds trust through respectful listening changes lives, empowers people and delivers what people need and want. They have taken the model, applied it in their situation - and delivered great results."
